The Person in the Glass

A poem of self-reflection
(Author unknown – offered by Marshal Andy)

When you get what you want,
In this struggle for self and this would make you king or queen for a day
Go to the mirror and look at yourself
And see what that person has to say

For he is the one you must trust
Nevermind all the rest
And he is with you clear up to the end
And you have passed your most dangerous and difficult test if the person in the glass is your friend

For it isn’t your husband or wife
Upon whose judgement you must pass
The person who counts the most in this life
Is the one looking back in the glass

You can be like Jack Horner and chisel a plum and think, “What a wonderful guy!”
But the guy in the glass says you’re only a bum if you can’t look him straight in the eye
You can fool the whole world down through the years
And you will get some pats on your back as you pass
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears
If you’ve cheated the person in the glass
